Paper Shredding Company Needed Before Medical Records Found in Dumpster

Medical records, which were not shredded, have been found in a dumpster at a local grocery store.  This was reported on March 17, 2009, by the Shreveport Times..  Aware that these were highly sensitive records, which should have been shredded by a local professional shredding company,  the store owner alerted local authorities.  The medical records belonged to a local doctor who had deposited the confidential materials there over the weekend.  According to the report the doctor is retrieving the records for proper disposal and has admitted his mistake.  It is unclear if he has secured the services of a professional paper shredding company.  It is also unclear if he will be prosecuted for a violation of the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
