Instead of Shredding confidential records, a Video Store tossed personal information into the trash as they close this video rental store. KCTV 5 News reported on October 6, 2008 that a national video store in Liberty, MO. tossed personal identification into the trash. No shredding company had shredded the documents. The national video store store had gone out of business and did not secure the services of a paper shredding company. A man who was going through the trash found personal information including names, Social Security numbers, phone numbers and credit card numbers.
The former manager of the store, stated “It was an accident.” The corporate office issued a statement that the store apparently did not follow company policies. The national video store appears to have a policy of document shredding, but just didn’t get the confidential files shredded in this case.
